Sonny and the Sandwitches [Throw My Ashes From This Pear when I Die, Empty Cellar Records]

Not long ago, Sonny Smith (Sonny & The Sunsets) survived a near-drowning off the coast of northern california. The experience affected him profoundly and led to a wealth of output including a play, a novel, and a stack of songs. Sonny's critically acclaimed "100 Records" project is itself a direct product of Sonny's fight with the sea. A novel he began, "Adelard the Drowned", broke into 100 pieces. Four of those pieces come as songs on this 7" e.p., each bound to the next by a twisted braid of water and death. Through the fog and the haze, however, there lies in these songs a shared sense of redemption, transformation, or reawakening. Featuring appearances by Heidi and Grace of the The Sandwitches and a long-lost band called The Transients, this record features Sonny's songwriting at its strongest, staring death in the face. Perhaps, this is in part why the ocean gave him back. Recorded in San Francisco and mastered by Paul Oldham - Empty Cellar Records

The 7'' is out December 11th and can be picked up here

Levek [Look On The Bright Side b/w Slow 7'', Father/Daughter Records]

It's been a long time coming but Florida's Levek is finally getting a release on Father/Daughter Records. Since the inception of this fantastic label, Levek has been on their radar and as that old saying goes, good things do come to those who wait, no matter how hard it may be to follow such simple advice. Levek is David Levesque who has made some rounds around the blogosphere with his covers for Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear. His style is fairly diverse and delivers something out of the ordinary. For me, having visited Florida many times, its not surprising to me "Look On The Bright Side" sounds the way it does. A bit tropical but psychedelic, a bit afrobeat but pop all at the same time but definitely something worth checking out.

The debut single will be limited to 400 copies on red vinyl and will be released November 16th. Pick it up here as this will also be accompanied by a digital download bundle featuring the two tracks from the single as well as three other songs and of course those amazing Father/Daughter buttons

But before the album drops on January 18th, the duo will be releasing yet one more 7'' single on October 26th and the featured tracks will not be included on Unlearn but unique to this release.

Kurt Vile [In My Time 7'', Matador Records]

Its always cool to hear a new song performed live by one of your favorite artists and wonder what the hell it is your listening to. You madly go through the artists' entire catalog of songs trying to figure out where you heard those lyrics and melody. Soon, despair sets in and you give up until four months later the label releases a PR email with said song as the mp3 download off of the upcoming record release. Case in point, Kurt Vile's latest 7'' single, "In My Time" is a perfect example. I heard him play the song during Woodsist Fest at Big Sur back in June and thought I was going crazy about where I had heard this song. I've been listening to it for some time now from footage I shot from the show but could never figure out the title. I am glad to know I wasn't going mad but the song I heard so long ago is probably the first single to be released off the new album due in 2011. The single will be accompanied by two other new tracks with a November 9th release date (October 25th digitally). I finally have some closure over the issue; thanks Matador for resolving the issue.

Quiet Lights [Ablaze]

Last week featured a music video from Brooklyn's Quiet Lights for one of their songs from a 3 song EP that can be downloaded here for free. This week however features some fresh material from the shoegaze band as they have recently released a new digital single that will be part of a full length titled Look For The Big Fear out next year. As with the EP the single can be found here for free digital download with the B side sounding just as good.

Gauntlet Hair [Out, Don't..., Mexican Summer]

Debuted on GorillavsBear this morning, Gauntlet Hair will be having a second 7'' release out soon (release date still unknown) on Mexican Summer

The duo of Andy R. and Craig Nice makes up Denver, CO’s Gauntlet Hair, but the gravity of the situation they create goes deeper than that. Both men are part of the Rhinoceropolis house in the city, and have sparked a musical movement that’s already gotten some dap via electronic artist Pictureplane. Gauntlet Hair divides the dance beats with an icy spell of post-punk and chilly, urbane vocals, but keep the rhythm up front and the aural violence at tense levels. Imagine the gorgeous gents of Duran Duran dressing up as Liars and showing up to the beardo mountain Brooklyn commune to pants the guys in Yeasayer, and you’re a bit on course to defining the heavy space hits and body-moving apocalypse grooves they dumpster-dine on every night - Mexican Summer

Gauntlet Hair go on tour with Woodsman this Fall, see below tour dates (NSFW)

La Sera [Never Come Around, Hardly Art]

Vivian Girls frontwoman Katy Goodman has been hard at work on yet another solo project called La Sera. A few months ago she released a 7'' record on Art Fag for All Saints Day and was quick to follow that up with a very different sounding project which will have its first 7'' released on Hardly Art November 16th. As far as Vivian Girls go, the band have been recording several tracks off an upcoming and third LP titled Share The Joy which will be released in 2011 on Polyvinyl. For a quick update check here for all the latest on Vivian Girls.

La Sera will be performing with Wax Idols and No Joy in San Francisco on November 3rd at Hemlock Tavern

Dash Jacket [Leisure Burn 7'', Fire Talk Records]

This amazing new garage gem from OC boys Matt and Thom was the third new 7'' single from label Fire Talk Records. Dash Jacket have quickly become one of my favorite new young bands around as their music is the perfect brand of lo-fi garage rock. Even though the track is a bit short, coming in at under 2 minutes, that is just more of a reason to move the needle back on the opening grooves of this catchy song to play over and over.

Dash Jacket - Leisure Burn

The record can be found here and will ship out on November 23rd

Dead Gaze [Emanuel Can't Come Close Enough, Fire Talk Records]

Lately I've been pretty interested in the music from Mississippi's Dead Gaze and was stoked to seem him as the latest artist to be released on Fire Talk Records. All of the recordings are done solely by Cole Furlow who brilliantly put together this garage track. "Emanuel Can't Come Close Enough" is the B Side from the record and has a November 23rd release date. The single can be found here for pre-order.

Beach Fossils [Face It / Distance 7'', Captured Tracks]

Beach Fossils is a band I have come to love more and more after each play of their debut self-titled album; from the first listen to "Daydream" I was an instant of the Brooklyn band. And they have been quick off the mark with a new 7'' with an October 12th release date. The record will feature two brand new songs and can be heard below.

Roman Ruins [PASTOR/AL 7'', Gold Robot Records]

For anyone who got the chance to see Beach House this year live would have noticed the obvious addition of another band member, Graham Hill. Whether or not he stays with the band for recording remains to be seen but I really appreciated getting to listen to a live drum kit during the set. Either way Hill is keeping busy with Papercuts, The Parish (plus several other bands) and now the release of a new solo 7'' from Gold Robot Records. This record probably would have went right on by if it wasn't for his genius plan to remix and release my favorite Teen Dream track "Lover Of Mine" to grab the attention of the public. The move payed off; I was drawn in, loved the remix and liked the track off the 45. The song is not a reflection of his Papercuts or Beach House gigs, the music is all electronic and heavily synthed.

The Delta Mirror & Sunset [Live Clip, Terroreyes.tv]

Good things are going on over at Terroreys.tv; they launched a newly designed website which looks very sharp, released their first ever 7'' release featuring the artist Tera Melos for the track "Frozen Zoo" along with a couple remixes of the said track, and lastly they debuted two new live clips from The Delta Mirrors performing "Undeveloped Unreturned" and Sunset playing two songs, "Old Growth" & "New York Love". The Sacramento based group keep getting better and better and with Sean Stout behind the lens expect more great things to come from Terroreyes.tv.

On August 30th, they will be putting on a show along with KDVS (Davis, CA) featuring Wavves, Ganglians, G.Green and Produce Produce at Sol Collective in Sacramento.

Still Corners [Don't Fall In Love 7'', The Great Pop Supplement]

Stumbled upon this indie-pop slow jam track from London England's Still Corners' soon to be released 7'' on The Great Pop Supplement and loved it instantly. "Don't Fall In Love'' is the follow up to the much loved single "Endless Summer''.

Craft Spells [Party Talk 7'', Captured Tracks]

Its been a long long time coming and I can't believe I was able to keep this a secret but two days ago was the official announcement that Craft Spells had signed to Captured Tracks and will have a 7'' released on the Brooklyn label. July 31st marked my last night in my home town of Stockton and it was spent listening to the sounds of Justin and Frankie at a house show. Even as the adrenaline was at a high, they took time out to make the special announcement of a Captured Tracks deal, which is huge for Stockton (seriously, there was Pavement and then....) but what is more important is that the town with a ugly reputation has produced something beautiful and like I have said so many times, something to be proud of.
