Record Review: Seapony [Go With Me, Hardly Art]

By Jennifer Graciano

Seapony have come a long way since their reign on music discovery sites and unwavering presence on various music blogs. The easy breezy pop from the Seattle based three-piece has spread like wild fire, and with only a handful of their dreamy tunes made available, were quickly snatched up by Hardly Art for their debut full length bursting with simplistic charm, “Go With Me.”

Album opener “Dreaming” delivers everything we have come to expect from Seapony; an earworm noise-pop of a track with upbeat effortlessness. “I Never Would” brings the somber side of Seapony to surface, their usual pep cast to the side with standard drum machine beats and dejected vocals. While “Into the Sea” plays off standard surf-rock chords with Jen Weidl’s endearingly flat vocals in tow, easily one of the most memorable on the album. Weidl’s vocals show some potential for range during “I Really Do,” with hints of reflective melancholy over continued surf influenced chords; that potential is never played out as Weidl sings unwaveringly from her comfortable, practically passive, style.

Seapony [Blue Star, Hardly Art]

Can't say I've been quick about listening to Seapony with the few songs that have been released so far; but after "Blue Star" was premiered on a few blogs this week, it is safe to say this band has gotten my attention. The song has all the fuzzy characteristics that I like in my tunes and has me wanting more. The album will be out May31st on Hardly Art and will be playing a killer of a show in San Francisco at Hemlock May 29th along with Eternal Summers and blog favorites The Beets.

La Sera [Never Come Around, Hardly Art]

Vivian Girls frontwoman Katy Goodman has been hard at work on yet another solo project called La Sera. A few months ago she released a 7'' record on Art Fag for All Saints Day and was quick to follow that up with a very different sounding project which will have its first 7'' released on Hardly Art November 16th. As far as Vivian Girls go, the band have been recording several tracks off an upcoming and third LP titled Share The Joy which will be released in 2011 on Polyvinyl. For a quick update check here for all the latest on Vivian Girls.

La Sera will be performing with Wax Idols and No Joy in San Francisco on November 3rd at Hemlock Tavern

Woven Bones [I've Gotta Get 7'', Hardly Art]

A couple days ago an official announcement was made that fuzz-psych rockers Woven Bones signed with Hardly Art soon after the Insound Studio Session was posted and it only gets better. Hardly Art will be releasing a new 7'' on August 10th with the following track "I've Gotta Get'' b/w "Hey Kid" and a full length release some time in 2011. Their previous release on Hozac was simply amazing and the sound of this new single just elevates this band to new heights. Catch the band in San Francisco as they headline Bottom of the Hill along with The Sandwitches and The Splinters August 18th
