Cold Showers [I Don't Mind, Mexican Summer]

Cold Showers bang out some crazy vibes on their newly released Highlands 7" out on Mexican Summer. The L.A. based four piece craft some post-punk pop bangers that get stuck in your head for days, definitely worth keeping tabs on these guys.

The Vacant Lots [Confusion, Mexican Summer]

Mexican Summer just keeps doing it for me as far as psych releases go. Their next offering to the world is from The Vacant Lots, a band from Burlington Vermont with such a sweet psychedelic sound that I was instantly hooked. Its easy to get lost in this track as each listen brings out something new that wasn't heard before as layer after layer of sound blends together. The single is out now and can be found here with another pysch-heavy track on the B-side.

Ramases [Balloon, Mexican Summer]

Fully aware that this song came out way back in April on several blogs from the Mexican Summer preview but for some reason the album didn't seem to follow suit.  Even if it did and I simply missed it, I'm blogging this now to spread word about this amazing repress of a 1970's album that has once again seen the light of day.  Ramases are originally from England and that psychedelic yet brit-pop sound is very much present here.  The album can be found here

Beaches [Halve, Mexican Summer]

Went browsing through the Mexican Summer lineup once again and got drawn into the sounds of Beaches. The band are from Melbourne Australia and have released a new EP titled Eternal Sphere which features the two tracks from this summer's 7'' release.  The music can be described as shoegaze, psychedelic and garage or as the label puts it:
The stylistic shades reflect the shared musical loves of Beaches, from 1960s hit parades to 1970s psychedelia, shoegaze to prog, southern boogie to krautrock. Two thick, clotted sides of heavy psychedelic, instrumental destructo rock, pupils completely dilated from sugar cubes the size of flash cubes. Rippin’ up the surf and kickin’ sand in your eyes, these three tracks are the most stunning examples in the genre we’ve heard in some time - Mexican Summer

Record Review: Dungen [Skit I Allt, Mexican Summer]

by Sebastian Ruan

Dungen’s sixth LP, Skit I Allt, opens with what I consider elevator music, but with a fast-paced jazz drummer rockin’ away. “Vara Snabb”’s reverb-heavy piano chords and racing bass line give the orchestra’s flute enough time to lay down some very relaxing and familiar-sounding riffs. Sweden has been unleashing so many indie/electronic acts this decade that its hard to keep them all under observation, but Dungen has certainly stepped into the limelight with their latest effort in the psych-rock genre.

What’s most enjoyable about this album are its incredible compositions, adding whatever interesting sounds to startle the listener. Hands down to multi-instrumentalist Gustav Ejstes for providing those sparks of bliss (whether they be the random 2-second drum solos, or the psyched-out synth/guitar/bass harmonies, or even whatever effect they got going to kick off “Brallor.”) Although those moments of genius lay strewn throughout the album, it’s those ‘fected-out jams on “Hogdalstoppen” and “Blandband” (what a track title!) that really get me going.

Listening to those song-long jams reminds me of the late afternoon jam sessions I used to have with my colleagues where we’d incorporate whatever was at-hand to the tune until we’ve literally exhausted our adventurousness, then we’d have a few more beers and do it all again. Skit I Allt, although not as critically successful as the ever-replayable Ta Det Lugnt, has you wanting to pull out your guitar and pedals and just soloing over whatever you have laid down. If that doesn’t make an album good, I don’t know what does.

But as I said previously, the record feels like a ride on an elevator, albeit one that actually has you clapping to jams like “Min Enda Van” and the News Talk Show-ready title track. Ejstes’ voice is a warming guide through Skit I Allt and he leaves you at the end of the short passage with “Marken Lag Stilla,” a delicate and sincere psychedelic closer. This album may not be it’s grandeur predecessor, but it’s a quaint and enjoyable record with some wonderful tunes and some top-notch fluttery interludes that you may soon want to come back to soak it all in.

Gauntlet Hair [Out, Don't..., Mexican Summer]

Debuted on GorillavsBear this morning, Gauntlet Hair will be having a second 7'' release out soon (release date still unknown) on Mexican Summer

The duo of Andy R. and Craig Nice makes up Denver, CO’s Gauntlet Hair, but the gravity of the situation they create goes deeper than that. Both men are part of the Rhinoceropolis house in the city, and have sparked a musical movement that’s already gotten some dap via electronic artist Pictureplane. Gauntlet Hair divides the dance beats with an icy spell of post-punk and chilly, urbane vocals, but keep the rhythm up front and the aural violence at tense levels. Imagine the gorgeous gents of Duran Duran dressing up as Liars and showing up to the beardo mountain Brooklyn commune to pants the guys in Yeasayer, and you’re a bit on course to defining the heavy space hits and body-moving apocalypse grooves they dumpster-dine on every night - Mexican Summer

Gauntlet Hair go on tour with Woodsman this Fall, see below tour dates (NSFW)

Dungen [Skit I Allt, Mexican Summer]

I was happy to see this on the Mexican Summer website, the announcement of the new Dungen album, Skit I Allt. The Swedish psych rockers have been a personal favorite of mine for several years now and have been craving some new jams since their previous album 4. Dungen fuses psych rock with elements of Hip Hop and Jazz with the latter being the most obvious and dominant. The new track "Marken Låg Stilla" starts off with Gustav solo on piano which builds into the familiar sound that Dungen have harnessed over the years; Jazz drum rhythms and piano with wailing guitar and Gustavs unmistakable vocals. The album has a September 14th release date and a Fall tour to soon follow.

The album can be picked up here on September 14th

The Mantles [Pink Information, Mexican Summer]

San Francisco have yet another awesome band to be proud of. The Mantles are a relatively new group that play killer garage-pop rock, songs like "What We Do Matters" and "Look Away" just get you moving. Their 2009 self-titled debut release was an incredible album that I just can't stop spinning and is worth a listen to. Their live shows are solid, fun to watch and they play with a very good sense of humor. The Mantles will have a new EP called Pink Information, coming out on Mexican Summer and the song "Cascades" from the new record is a gem. Its the perfect summer time jam with a lovely retro feel to it; The Velvet Underground first came to mind and that is always a plus.

Best Coast [Crazy For You, Mexican Summer]

After a series of sold out and hard to get 7'' singles and an ep, Southern California's Best Coast will finally be releasing their full length debut record on Mexican Summer. The cover art is all about California love, as well as giving Snacks (Bethany's cat) his opportunity to shine. The album will feature 12 brand new songs and thankfully "When I'm With You" (CD and digital only though) will be added as a bonus track. No single for the new album has been released but pretty sure there will be one soon.

There is actually a pre-order for the album here and it is bound to sell out quick

The single should be released if not in May then in the next couple months. The release will contain three tracks from the band.
