Ganglians [That's What I Want Live Clip, Terroreyes]

Even though Terroreyes had made the move from Sacramento to Los Angeles over the summer that wouldn't stop Sean from filming his good friends Ganglians during their recent tour. And while the two have worked together several times in the California state capital this video differs a bit from the high energy shots that made up the others. The band is stripped down to acoustic instruments as they perform a personal favorite from their new LP Still Living.

Record Review: Ganglians [Still Living, Lefse Records]

Two years after the release of their last record, Sacramento’s Ganglians return with a double LP out through Lefse Records. Still Living is the latest from the four piece, an hour long work that dabbles in just about every genre and sheds most of the lo-fi psych-folk tag they’ve toted following their debut release. The weird brand rock Ganglians had mastered takes a back seat as they stretch their abilities, and prove they’re more than capable of making great music without smoke and mirrors.

Album opener “Call Me” and the three tracks that follow: “That’s What I Want,” “Evil Weave,” and “Sleep” could turn into one long track if you’re not paying close attention. Transitions for the first half of the album are on point as tracks flow naturally; Ganglians sound more attentive, settled, than on their previous efforts. The roundabout psychedelia the four-piece established early on in their career is, for the most part, gone. Either songwriting has improved since Monster Head Room, or the lack of noisy reverb on Still Living makes it easier to appreciate; on “Good Times,” Ryan Grubbs sings: “I can’t find a job/what’s the use of trying at all?” and despite the desperation, quickly follows up with “I’ll be having a good time/I’ll be having a wonderful, wonderful time.”

The second single from Sacramento's Ganglians was released yesterday, which premiered on Stereogum. The double LP, Still Living won't be out until August 23rd so in the meantime listen to some of the tracks below from this hugely anticipated album.

It has been a very long time for this announcement to finally come but alas it is here. Ganglians are back with a brand new album coming through on Lefse Records. I've been loving these songs throughout the last few years at their live shows and am very glad to see them finally on wax. The only downer is that this double LP wont be released until August 23rd but in the meantime, stream below the first single and personal favorite off the album, "Jungle".

Ganglians [Jungle / Fast Song, Live Clip]

A couple weeks ago Weekly Tape Deck got a video from terroreyes.tv featuring The Beets which I absolutely loved (the filming/color technique was incredible). This time around, probably around the same time frame, they filmed Ganglians perform a couple new tracks, "Jungle" and "Fast Song"

Ganglians / The Beets / German Measles [Sol Collective, Sacramento 05.03.2010]

Each time Ganglians had a show either in Sacramento or San Francisco this year, for whatever reason I was not able to attend. But the chance to see them play along with The Beets was one I simply could not miss. The venue was called the Sol Collective, a place in Sacramento which is essentially run by local artists to promote artistic creativity in the city. The place is like a mini gallery with art hanging on the walls and many open rooms to explore. In one corner of the place was a small stage where the music took place.

The opening band was a cover band of an all girl group of name I have forgotten (sorry) but at least these guys rocked whigs and stockings. Next was New Yorks German Measles, who have a 7'' single released on Vivian Girls label Wild World and an EP on Captured Tracks. The songs were not bad, this being my first exposure to the band, but just was not quite into them all that much.

Technically, The Beets were to go on next, another New York band released by Captured Tracks. But from what I heard, they had to get towed to the place due to van trouble and were a bit late (Ganglians went on to play in the mean time). I was a bit more familiar with this band from a 7'' single I had from them and was already liking their music. Their artwork is fantastic, everything from their album covers to backdrops, posters and shirts are done by Matt Volz and their sound is very catchy. Volz also hides behind the large speaker in which he plays recorders, a cassette player for sound effects and manages the bands lighting, all at once. The video image quality is a bit poor due to lack of lighting but the audio came out pretty good.

Ganglians who were supposed to go last but when third went on played and played an extensive set that again blew me away. They performed a couple new songs which sounded really good (nothing yet on a new album or single yet, crossing the fingers) and played both songs from their Captured Tracks single and most of the album on the Woodsist album (no "Rats Man" but still a solid set nonetheless). Reverb in full effect, Ryan Grubbs was stellar as he carried notes and rocked out on keyboard, acoustic and electric guitar. A band on the rise and one to get excited about, Ganglians is one act to see as soon as possible.
