Record Review: The Fresh & Onlys [Secret Walls, Sacred Bones Records]

The bay area has undoubtedly become the Mecca of psychedelic garage acts. Listen to a track that puts you in a dazed state with layered guitars and hazy vocals and the band is more than likely from the San Francisco area. In this onslaught of similar sounds, The Fresh & Onlys manage to stand out from the pack on their latest “Secret Walls” EP. By now we should expect the Fresh & Onlys to veer from the sounds of their previous release with ease, but “Secret Walls” came out of left field. And although this was an unexpected change, it’s quickly becoming my favorite from the San Francisco psych-rock outfit.
Changing directions release after release, the Fresh & Onlys have grown into something virtually unrecognizable from their “Imaginary Friends” EP released in 2008. And don’t expect to find anything like the head bobbing jam “Summer of Love,” or the lively “Fascinated” on “Secret Walls,” instead you’ll find only remnants of the Fresh & Onlys “Play It Strange” charm shine through chords as they mute their jangly pop for a more psych defined approach.
Secret Walls is a brisk look into their new sound. Five tracks that barely make it to the eighteen minute mark, but crafted in a way that seem to last an eternity. It still has some of that pop melody the Fresh & Onlys work so well, but you might have to strain your ear to hear it as it’s morphed and elongated. A more spacious and thoughtful sound than what we‘re used to from them.

The Fresh & Onlys [Do You Believe In Destiny, Sacred Bones Records]
"Do You Believe In Destiny" will be released on an upcoming EP from San Francisco's The Fresh & Onlys. The EP is titled Secret Walls and has a April 26th release date on Sacred Bones Records. The band will be kicking off a new nation wide tour on the 27th at Bottom of the Hill with The Growlers, The PLeasure Kills and The Wrong Words in support.

Record Review: The Fresh & Onlys [Play It Strange, In the Red]

It’s an Indian summer over here on the West Coast, with bright sunny days and warm fall nights welcoming the changing colors of the leaves. A perfect companion for this season is “Play it Strange,” the latest album from San Francisco garage-rockers the Fresh & Onlys. Released on a label called In the Red Recordings, this is the third full-length LP from the band. The album is a vaguely nostalgic, subtly psychedelic backyard romp that starts very strong and gradually tapers off a little toward the end.
“Play It Strange” definitely has a familiar, old-fashioned feel to it. Rather than a forward progression into uncharted musical territory, the Fresh & Onlys instead offer up a summation of sounds from decades past. This style suits the band well, offering a fresh breath of autumn air to its listeners in an era dominated by noisy post-rock and electronic pop.
“Summer of Love” echoes the dead flowers of sixties psychedelia, while “Strange Disposition” rides the wave between a giddy-up Western and summer surf-rock. “I’m All Shook Up” conjures images of Elvis at the beach, on acid. On “Be My Hooker,” the band sings loud and plays fast for a deeply satisfying rock-n-roll tune. Clear standouts on the album include the radio-friendly “Waterfall,” the catchy “Fascinated,” and the epic garage-rock jam “Tropical Island Suite” which will stay in your head long after the song is over, humming the refrain “Who are we/ my love. “
Although the last four songs are slightly less memorable than the rest, overall, the album is a success. Front man Tim Cohen’s reverberated vocals suitably capture the sound of San Francisco with enough nuances to make him stand out as a great artist. The album’s consistent sound brings together fifties surf riffs, sixties psych-rock, eighties new wave, and nineties shoegaze into something completely new and exciting.
Whether you’re at the beach, in the city, or out in the woods, “Play It Strange” radiates California vibes through and through. This album is a great achievement for the Fresh & Onlys and a strong testament to the band’s potential.

As far as San Francisco/Bay Area music goes, there is a lot to choose from. The musical styles range from garage acts like Ty Segall & Thee Oh Sees, post-punk bands like Weekend, the psychedelic sounds of Wooden Shjips (and Moon Duo) to pop bands like Girls & Morning Benders (Berkeley) and this list doesn't even begin to scratch the surface. But for me one of the best bands I have come across and have had the pleasure of listening to whether it be on vinyl, cassette or live is the Fresh & Onlys. They are a true Rock & Roll band who craft such amazing songs and perform them superbly during their live sets.
Tim Cohen is an amazing singer/songwriter and is backed up by three of the San Francisco's finest. 2009 was a very busy year for the young band with two full length releases, a couple compilations (In A Cloud from Secret Seven & Welcome Home: Diggin' The Universe from Woodsist) and a never ending series of 7'' releases (not to mention Tim Cohen's two and soon the be three solo albums) that one would think the musical creativity would need some rest. Thus the magic has been easy to call upon once again as the couple songs released from the soon to be released album Play It Strange sound just as strong and just as good as anything else the band has put out. The album has an October 12th release date from In The Red.

The Fresh & Onlys [Vanishing Cream 7'', Plastic Spoon Records]
San Francisco's The Fresh & Onlys seem to be the masters of the 7'' format. It has become impossible to keep up with these guys as they release smashing single after single. I picked this up during the Woodsist Fest at Big Sur California and was not disappointed. It is pure Rock n Roll as only the Fresh & Onlys can produce. If your in town July 3rd, stop by Serra Bowl in Daly City to check out the Fresh & Onlys along with Thee Oh Sees, Sic Alps, and Eddie Current Suppression Ring in what will probably be the best free show this year.
