Record Review: Young Prisms [Friends For Now, Kanine Records]

San Francisco based Young Prisms have a superb sound: garage rock with psychedelic undertones, and a bit of pop infused tunes. Their debut full-length “Friends For Now” is filled with sweet melodies, distorted guitar riffs, and general noise that sounds pleasingly frenzied.

Overpowering sounds contained in some songs within “Friends For Now” are abandoned on tracks like “If You Want To” and “Sugar”; both of which are delightful and will most likely be fan favorites for their pop charm. “If You Want To” has a catchy beat with an all too familiar surf rock appeal, restrained vocals repeat lazily “If you want to/If you want to” which sounds a lot like a polished take on Wavves’ early material. “In Your Room” is all about warped sound with hazy vocals that fade in and out alongside some really distorted riffs.

Record Review: Braids [Native Speaker, Kanine Records]

It’s not easy to define Braids’ sound.. they create music that is light and airy, while utterly overwhelming (in the loveliest of ways.) Braids’ use of layering adds more depth to their sound and serves for a wonderfully mesmerizing listen. With gorgeous soundscapes that build up continuously, you’ll find it hard not to fall in love with the delicate melodies on their debut full-length, “Native Speaker.”

The albums most impressive tracks: “Lemonade,” “Glass Deers,” “Lammicken,” and the title track, all have the same lengthy introduction that seem to go on forever. Lemonade trickles into your ears as barely audible garbled noise. It quickly swells into an elegant piece with echoing vocals and a completely engrossing melody. You’ll barely notice the curse words Raphaelle Standell-Preston belts out as her singing is eerily beautiful; even the most crass lyrics appear to be quite innocent.

“Glass Deers” opens up with Katie Lee on keys playing a continuous set that practically lulls you to sleep. The dream ends quickly as Standell-Preston trades in her charming singing for some stifled shrieks. Structure of the song changes as the swooping sounds which gradually built-up are abandoned; the delicate sounds gone. Eventually the music mirrors the vocals as they are muffled by loud drums and some truly splendid chords.

Young Prisms [Sugar, Kanine Records]

Last Friday, the first single from Young Prisms' debut LP on Kanine Records was released to the world on Pitchfork. The song about white powder will be accompanied by 9 other tracks, several of which have been released on split 7's and Daytrotter throughout this last year but the January 18th release date for Friends For Now can't come soon enough.

Eternal Summers [Pogo, Kanine Records]

Brand new track "Pogo" has been released from Virginia's Eternal Summers. The song will be released as a single on August 31st with their full length LP Silver due out the following month on September 28th. The band filmed a music video for Pogo but still unsure as to when that will be ready.
