Last night at Bimbo's 365, in San Francisco's Italian district, the venue for Beach House and guest Bachelorette.
First time seeing both bands live, but my first real exposure to Bachelorette. She is a solo act who goes between two microphones to add layer after layer of sound effects and vocals; think of it as being a background singer to herself. Her music was ambient/at times techno beat with deep bass lines and guitar riffs thrown in. Her set was about 40 minutes and quite enjoyable. I thought she was a new artist, but at the merch table she had about 3 or 4 albums already done. The San Francisco All Shook Down blog had her listed as an opening act not to miss and I agree, she is for sure someone to catch.
Next was the duo err trio? of Beach House (they have a drummer now which sounds a lot better than pre-recorded beats in my opinion). The dreamy-pop music came to life as they played every song from their new album Teen Dream and some tracks from Devotion. Their may have been a new song or two thrown in; that or I can't recognize songs from their first album yet. Their set was amazing; Norway, Silver Soul, Gila, Take Care...actually, every song sounded unbelievable live. All the elements of their music fused together perfectly for an hour and half set that made you feel as if you were floating on clouds. The silver spinning diamonds in the background with beautiful lighting colors made this performance seem unreal. Maybe it was all a dream, but then again, that is how Beach House's music makes you feel.
