Dirty Beaches [100 Highways, Daytrotter Session]

The latest Daytrotter sesh goes to Vancouver's (originally from Montreal) Dirty Beaches. Released yesterday Alex Zhang Hungtai performs four raw, lo-fi and gritty tracks which can be found from his latest LP, Badlands, on Zoo Music. The album may possibly be out around February/March which would coincide with his tour with Dum Dum Girls and Minks. Catch all three bands at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on February 16th.

Idiot Glee [All Packed Up, Daytrotter Session]

Very happy yesterday afternoon to see that Lexington Kentucky's Idiot Glee got the Daytrotter treatment. I have been a huge fan of James Friley's work since that video I posted a few months back for his cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" recorded by Ian Perlman. The bio on Daytrotter compares Friley's vocal sound to those of soul singers from the past and I would have to agree. There is definitely something unique to the electronic conducting artist's vocal style that sets him apart from many of the artists of our time. The music feels a bit vintage yet satisfies the contemporary and modern craving.

Toro Y Moi [Blessa / You Hid, Daytrotter Session]

The signs were all there, Chaz's amazing video shoot for Yours Truly back in May, the hiring of a full band for his live shows during the spring/summer and the very good sounding 7'' Leave Everywhere which dropped the whole chillwave act and gave him a more indie sound. While he was one of the original musicians to push chillwave and his album Causers Of This is an album of the year, I am very happy to listen to his latest Daytrotter session. Which ever direction Chaz moves Toro Y Moi I will be listening regardless as his talents as a musician have broken though as he simply makes amazing music.

Sonny and the Sunsets [Death Cream, Daytrotter Session]

It's an exciting time for Sonny and the Sunsets. The San Francisco band have recently signed for Fat Possum Records as well as had a slot on this year's Pitchfork Music Festival. I have been a huge fan of their debut record Tomorrow Is Alright and was kind of surprised not much was really said about it or the band (outside of San Francisco). But signing to Fat Possum has surely put this band in the forefront now; the label will be re-releasing the album digitally and by CD August 31st and they have a couple live dates coming in the next few weeks. Yesterday marked their Daytrotter debut with this set of 6 wonderfully recorded songs; some off of Tomorrow Is Alright and a couple new ones.
