Interview [Cloud Nothings]

Jacob Corbin of Collective Crowd Records and I went backstage after the Cloud Nothings / Toro Y Moi show to chat about a few things. Actually a lot of topics were covered that night ranging from Berlin to Space Cunts.

Record Review: Cloud Nothings [s/t, Carpark Records]

by Tim Draut
Cloud Nothings is the punk-rock/power-pop brainchild of Cleveland’s Dylan Baldi, who has stepped out of the basement and into the studio to record his self-titled full length LP. The album is currently out on Carpark Records. Providing all the vocals and instruments on the album, Baldi has made the transition from lo-fi bedroom artist to studio quality pop rocker without sacrificing an ounce of intensity.

Although this is not really a “post-punk” album, it is definitely a punk-inspired pop album. This style is established right off the bat with the lo-fi tease on the opening guitar riff to “Understand At All,” before it kickstarts into a full-bodied power-pop anthem.

The punk influence becomes most apparent on the following track, “Not Important,” where Baldi lets loose and suspends some of his bratty innocence by belting out the brash vocals (“You’re just stupid/ And I’m so lazy I don’t care/ About your problems!”) and shredding on his guitar. It seems like he lets out most of his aggression on this one track, as he goes back to being “cute” on the catchy pop single “Should Have.”

Kevin Greenspon / Cloud Nothings [Split CD-R, Bridgetown Records]

Monday afternoon, Kevin Greenspon informed me that his long awaited split CD-R with Cloud Nothings was now ready to be heard and released to the world. I love split CD/Cassette/vinyl releases as they always offer something special and this one truly delivers. Greenspon is a fantastic songwriter who crafted five outstanding, albeit lyrically dark tracks for the split. He is accompanied by Travis von Sydow (Ancient Crux) on drums. Dylan Baldi's five contributions are splendid and catchy pop songs that see his recording technique improved to give a much cleaner sound and a little less on the raw lo-fi from his earlier releases.

The CDs are limited to 250 copies and can be found here and on cassette here

Cloud Nothings & Real Estate [Leave You Forever & Out Of Tune 7''s, True Panther Sounds]

My love for True Panther Sounds has steadily grown since I first learned about the sight and have been all praise. Even with previous releases from Girls, Delorean, Tamaryn, and Morning Benders, the catalog just got even better with new 7'' additions from two of my favorites bands, Cloud Nothings and Real Estate. Both had songs debuted on the Weekly Tape Deck site and the tracks couldn't have sounded any better. "Leave You Forever" sounds much cleaner than previous recordings I've heard and is very upbeat and danceable.

Real Estate's contribution, as expected, is more mellow and slowed down but the track "Out Of Tune" is simply gorgeous and really showcases why Real Estate is one of the best bands to come out over the last year.

Both 7''s will be released October 12th but the pre-order is up now. Each are $5 with the Cloud Nothings record containing 4 tracks. Pick them up here

Cloud Nothings [Even If It Worked Out 7'', Old Flame Records]

I learned about this Cleveland band from the now sold out split cassette with Campfires released on Bathetic Records and was hooked ever since. Their music is centered around catchy pop tunes with fuzz (but of course) laced in between. The following track is off a new 7'' single to be released on June 24th on Old Flame Records.

The 7'' can be picked up here
Their full debut release on vinyl can be picked up here, CD here
